What KYC actually protects, the five mistakes that slow contributors down, and the one thing to remember before you start.

Let's Set The Stage

If you've ever wondered why OneForma asks for your ID before you can start earning, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions our community asks, and it's also one of the most misunderstood parts of joining the platform.

So we sat down (virtually) with one of our identity verification experts for a live community webinar to unpack exactly what KYC is, why it exists, and, most usefully, how to breeze through it instead of getting stuck. Here's what she told us, in her own words.

First, What Actually Is KYC?

KYC stands for "Know Your Customer," and if the term sounds like it belongs in a bank, that's because it does.

"KYC is known everywhere in the world, but it's mostly related to business and financial institutions that need to verify persons who they are working with... Here is your bank account: when you come to the bank, the bank officer will ask you for your ID to verify your identity. That is basically what KYC means."

The same logic applies to platforms like OneForma. Anywhere payment is involved, and on OneForma, you're being paid for real work, verification becomes mandatory, not optional.

It's Not Just for Us. It's for You, Too.

It's easy to see KYC as a hurdle. Our expert reframed it as something closer to a two-way agreement.

"We need security process that confirms to us that we are dealing with you, with a real person, not with some generated profile, or in a worst-case scenario, a fraudster who will try to benefit from what we have to offer you."

But the protection cuts both ways:

"You also need to be sure, from your end, that you are dealing with a legitimate and trustworthy company... If we ask you to present yourself to us, that means we are serious, and we are really offering what we offer."

In other words: verification is what lets OneForma confirm you're a real, skilled contributor, and it's what lets you confirm OneForma is a real, paying platform. Trust has to run both directions for the work to mean anything.

What You Actually Need

Verification comes down to two layers: a government-issued document, and a live check that confirms the person in the document is the person applying for work.

"Any sort of identity verification works based on government documents and your self-verification through a live match check."

That can be a passport, national ID card, driver's license, or another accepted document depending on your country. From there, a quick selfie confirms you're the person on the ID, even if your photo is a few years old.

"Nobody has an ID issued yesterday, so it doesn't have to be a one hundred percent match, but similar face similarity is necessary."

The Five Things That Actually Slow People Down

We asked directly: what trips people up? Her answer was consistent. It's almost never the technology. It's the details.

1. Skipping the instructions. If you think you will not be one hundred percent accurate, probably you will not, if you do not read it carefully and follow step by step.

2. Using an expired document. Expired IDs are declined immediately. This isn't a OneForma-specific rule, it's an industry standard.

3. Leaving out your full legal name. We need to see the full name presented on your ID... If your true name is, for example, Novak Đoković, but you leave a different name for KYC match purposes, you will not pass, because that's not the same person.

4. Using a VPN or proxy to mask your location. Use of VPN, proxy service, any sort of applications that can help you mask your trail, will actually play against you. In that case, we know you're trying to hide your identity.

5. Editing or altering your document. Do not do any sort of video or photo editing on your document, that is also a forgery. And even within a KYC process, we can establish whether you're doing something extra with your document or not.

The One Ticket Rule

If your verification doesn't go through, the instinct is to submit ticket after ticket. Don't.

"If you submit a ticket once, keep it that way. Do not submit multiple tickets, because that will not only bring us confusion, but also it will be confusing for you, what specific ticket is valid. So one is enough. And you just need to be patient, because sometimes the verification process takes up to seven days."

Your Data Is Protected, By Law, Not Just by Policy

For contributors who are (rightly) cautious about sharing personal documents online, this point matters:

"Anybody who does KYC needs to do it in accordance with all the laws, every single article of GDPR. So your data is fully protected, not shared with anyone, not stored anywhere (outside the process). This is used just for your KYC purposes and nothing else."

The One Thing to Remember

When asked to boil the entire session down to a single takeaway, the answer was immediate:

"True data. Legit document. And leaving legit, verifiable information from your end, so we can really be sure that we are dealing with real people that we want to onboard on our projects."

That's really the whole philosophy in one line. Verification isn't a wall between you and the work, it's the foundation that makes the work possible at all. Every contributor on OneForma, whether you're just getting started or you've been evaluating domain-specific AI outputs for years, goes through the same process, because trust has to be earned the same way by everyone.

If your KYC status is unclear, check your profile page for your verification status before you apply to a new project. It's the fastest way to catch an issue early instead of losing time later.
